Unveiling the Authentic Me at Midlife: A Journey of Rediscovery and Empowerment by Julie Bjelland, LMFT

Midlife often serves as a crossroads, prompting reflection on the journey behind and the path ahead. For me, this phase unfolded against the backdrop of an empty nest, menopausal health challenges, and significant revelations. However, it was also marked by shadows, leading me to a dark space that propelled a renewed commitment to my mental health and well-being.

Empty Nest and Menopause

As my sons moved out for college and menopausal challenges unfolded, I found myself in a labyrinth of emotions. The feelings of loss, uncertainty, and health challenges led to a decline in my mental well-being.

A Commitment to Mental Health

The darkness I felt was painful, and recognizing the importance of mental well-being, I made a conscious commitment to prioritize my mental health at all costs. It was a pivotal decision that propelled me toward self-care, seeking solace and refuge amidst the turbulence. I realized that to embark on a journey of self-discovery, I needed to understand who I was now and what I wanted at this new stage of life.

The Decision to Move to the Water

I was unhappy where I lived and decided to make radical changes in a bold move towards self-preservation. I ended my relationship, sold my home, and moved to the water—a place of solace and refuge. I needed to be by myself for a while and focus on my health. The calming embrace of the water became my sanctuary, offering a healing environment to face my challenges and embark on a new commitment to myself and my well-being.

Navigating Self-Discovery in a Waterside Haven

The waterside environment provided a backdrop for my self-discovery journey. Surrounded by nature's tranquility, I found the space to delve into my thoughts, emotions, and identity at this stage of life. The move to the water became a symbolic cleansing, washing away the darkness and making room for newfound clarity.

A New Commitment to Self and Health

I embraced a new commitment to myself and my health, welcoming change, growth, and a greater clarity of my needs. The water was a nurturing space for the inner work I needed.

Prioritizing Mental Health

Committed to prioritizing my mental health meant that I needed to learn to put myself first, laying the foundation for a transformative journey of self-discovery that would redefine my understanding of myself.

My Profound Discovery

This journey of self-discovery led me to a profound revelation—discovering I am Autistic. Learning that autism looks different in women was a realization that brought a new dimension to my self-understanding, unraveling nuances that I had long misunderstood about myself. The discovery of my neurodivergence became a cornerstone in embracing the most authentic version of myself.

Living Authentically

Now, armed with the knowledge of my neurodivergence, a commitment to mental health, and the transformative power of a waterside haven, I feel a freedom I've never experienced before to show up entirely as myself in the world. This newfound sense of liberation has given rise to my truly authentic self, allowing me to walk lighter and feel more free than ever before. The journey, marked by struggles and triumphs, has become the foundation of my self-discovery.

New Passions Birthed

Empowering Others Through Education and Support

In this new life phase, I relish the invigorating freedom of being authentically myself. Fueled by this experience, a passion has emerged to create a guide for others on a journey of self-discovery, empowering them to embrace authenticity wholly. In my latest course, "Journey of Self-Discovery," I share wisdom and offer guidance for individuals to live a life of freedom and authenticity.

Supporting Autistic Women

Furthermore, I am passionate about increasing awareness about the varied expressions of autism in women, helping to honor the 80% that are estimated to be undiagnosed. I offer a quiz and educational resources, engage in research, offer assessments, and host a support group for Autistic women, whether diagnosed or self-diagnosed later in life, or those who suspect they are Autistic. This supportive community aims to empower women to discover their true selves, a profound experience that nurtures self-compassion and self-understanding.

Conclusion

Embarking on the journey of discovering and embracing my truest self in midlife, especially amidst various challenges, is a powerful testament to the remarkable possibilities that emerge. It highlights the transformative impact of wholeheartedly embracing the most profound and authentic facets of ourselves, guided by self-compassion and profound self-acceptance. This journey symbolizes personal growth and the potential for profound positive change when we honor and embrace our authentic essence.
